BAUR Versand, an Otto Group mail order company, has dramatically increased the capacity of its Altenkunstadt site as a result of the implementation of a cross-corporate logistics optimization project. Auto ID systems from SICK are now used in most of the numerous new and modernized conveyor and sorter facilities in the distribution center and the parcel hub. In addition, BAUR relies primarily on sensors from SICK for a vast array of conveyor belt control tasks.
SICK Auto-Ident solutions at BAUR Versand
The objective of the cross-corporate project New market-oriented Logistics is to further strengthen the competitive edge of Otto Group. Frank Mechtold, Head of the Technical Services department at BAUR, explains: NmL is a strategic project for the Otto Group. The project was completed with great success; the positive results confirm all of our decisions and measures. Processes at BAUR are optimized by auto ID systems and sensors from SICK[/caption] The capacity of BAURs distribution center in Altenkunstadt was extended by more than 50 percent. Numerous new conveyor and sorter facilities featuring the latest auto ID technology from SICK were installed and existing systems were retrofitted accordingly. A total of 25 OPS systems are in use, equipped with CLV bar code scanners, ICR image-based code readers, or a combination of these technologies as hybrid systems. More than 800 additional sensors from SICK for system control and monitoring tasks ensure smooth coordination and synchronization of processes. Auto ID systems and sensor technology as decisive vendor selection criterion
The various system integrators for the individual facilities were requested to implement a uniform, consistent auto ID infrastructure for the entire site across all systems. BAURs main requirements included efficient spare parts logistics and maintenance, reduced training, easy integration of the bar code reading systems, simple adaptability to modified codes, high reading rates, as well as high-level service availability.
Bottom line
The implementation of Otto Groups new logistics concept at BAUR in Altenkunstadt is a resounding success. We have chosen the right technologies and vendors, enabling us to optimize our processes as planned. The auto ID systems and sensors from SICK excel with outstanding performance data and deliver this performance continuously and economically in day-to-day operations. Together with competent consulting and services, SICK provides a complete first-rate package, Frank Mechtold from BAUR sums up the project.
