Code readers: how to choose the right one for your company

Dec 12, 2023

Tracking data and collecting information are the keywords for efficiency in the digital world. An overview of the main code readers available on the market today.

Codes, in the purest sense of the term, are the gateway to strategic information. In an increasingly data-driven world, this is more valid than ever. And data itself confirms this trend. The global market for track and trace systems  is worth around $3.2 billion and it is expected to reach $6 billion by 2027.

Today the market offers many types of code readers to satisfy the diverse needs  of the market. They range from one-dimensional barcodes to two-dimensional codes — data matrix and QR code — to alphanumeric OCR identification codes. The list also includes systems with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which not only enable the reading, but also the writing and constant updating of information along the entire value chain.

Furthermore, digitalization has contributed to a qualitative and quantitative growth of intelligent vision sensors, that recognize and track products, opening the door to new information, while enabling the integration of inspection and localisation capabilities.

Dynamic code reading and data interpretation thus become a strategic added value to increase efficiency and competitiveness in the marketplace. We can distinguish code readers in three segments: identification systems, dimensioning systems, and hybrid systems. The latter are able to offer identification, positioning and weighing functionality simultaneously.

Code readers: identification

This first segment includes systems that offer object identification solutions along the entire logistics chain.

CLV Identification System is ideal for omnidirectional applications such as logistics, automotive, pharmaceutical, and food & beverage industries. It provides six-sided reading and start-stop or continuous operation.

ICR System is used for demanding code reading in transport and logistics sorting processes. It covers conveyor belts with widths of up to 1,600 millimetres and offers fully integrated code reading and machine vision solutions.

Lector65x System allows omnidirectional code reading in small and medium-sized conveyors and is used in logistics and airport applications. It stands out for dynamic focus adjustment and high depth of field during fixed focus operation.

RF Identification System is the solution for identifying objects of material flows with RFID tags. The system enables non-contact object identification of stacked material streams with RFID writing and reading devices.

Code readers: dimensioning

The second segment includes systems offering solutions x solutions for product dimensioning.

VMS4x00/5x00 is ideal for solutions requiring maximum precision. It offers a measurement accuracy of up to 5 mm x 5 mm x 2 mm, for object sizes up to 5,500 mm x 1,600 mm x 1,250 mm. It allows the detection of deformations from a dimension of 10 millimetres on all six sides.

VMS6x00/7x00 is the solution that allows the dimensioning and determination of the position of large or complex objects. It offers measuring accuracy of up to 20 mm x 20 mm x 20 mm, object sizes up to 2,600 mm x 2,000 mm x 3,000 mm and conveyor belt speeds up to 3.0 m/s.

Hybrid systems

We speak of hybrid or combined systems when solutions integrate identification, positioning and weighing systems.

Master Data Analyzer is used in the detection of master data of objects in intra-logistics and goods receiving processes. It allows the reading of 1D and 2D barcodes, with a measurement accuracy of 5 mm x 5 mm volume. It is a mobile solution with industrial rechargeable battery technology and WLAN.

Master Data Analyzer Vision, on the other hand, offers master data detection with 3D snapshot technology. It enables the reading of 1D and 2D codes with measurement accuracy of 5 mm x 5 mm x 2 mm. The measurement is based on 3D vision.

DWS Pallet is the solution for volumetric weight detection. The system allows the measurement and weighing of pallets and other bulky and large volume shipments.

Finally, DWS Dynamic is the system for dynamic identification, measurement and weighing of objects.

It is based on a modular structure and has an integrated Alibi memory for centralized storage of Legal for Trade data.
