An active opto-electronic protective device responsive to diffuse reflection (AOPDDR) is an ESPE whose transmitter elements send optical beams. When an opaque object reflects the beam, the AOPDDR detects that object. Only a very weak reflection is required, e.g. from dark clothing. Example: safety laser scanner.
